Hi friends, Dennis Simsek here. Your companion on this sometimes-rocky road and someone who knows the suffocating grip of health anxiety from the inside out. For years, I felt like a prisoner in my own body, constantly scanning for danger, convinced relaxation was a precursor to disaster. Today, I want to share not just what finally shifted for me, but why health anxiety clings on so fiercely, feeling so intensely personal, and the three essential shifts that led me to true peace. This wasn’t about silencing symptoms; it was about healing the root. Let’s dive in.

What Health Anxiety REALLY Is (It’s Not What You Think)
Let’s go deeper than the panic attacks, deeper than the dizzy spells or the racing heart. Until you see health anxiety clearly, you’ll keep fighting the wrong battle. After years trapped in its cycle, researching relentlessly, and guiding thousands globally, here’s my hard-earned truth:
Health anxiety isn’t a disorder; it’s an adaptation. A protector.
Your subconscious mind, in its misguided wisdom, is screaming: “If I keep you hyper-focused on potential danger, you’ll stay in control. You’ll stay alive.” This inner guard dog likely formed during a traumatic event – maybe a scary medical diagnosis (yours or a loved one’s), a profound loss, a childhood where safety felt fragile, or a period of overwhelming stress where your body became a warzone.
The tragic twist? You start associating safety with danger. The more relaxed you feel, the more vigilant your mind becomes. Joy feels suspicious. Ease feels unsafe. Your mind concludes: “Let’s just monitor the body constantly. Let’s find what’s wrong before it finds us.”
Cue the exhausting cycle: The compulsive checking. The frantic Googling. The endless doctor visits. The paralyzing panic.
It wasn’t my fault this pattern started, but it became my responsibility to change it. Why? Because this isn’t ultimately about your heart, your stomach, or your head. This is about your nervous system. Your protector has been yelling in the language of fear for years. Our job? To teach it a new language: calm, presence, trust. Not with a magic spell, but with consistent, loving repetition. That’s the rewiring path.
The 3 Daily Shifts That Finally Set Me Free
Understanding why health anxiety feels so intense is crucial. Now, let’s talk how. What can you do, practically, emotionally, neurologically, to break free? These are the three daily shifts that helped me reclaim my joy, presence, and confidence in my own skin:
Shift #1: Simplify Your Awareness (Stop Overwhelming Your System)
Most people stuck in health anxiety are drowning in “solutions.” Podcasts, supplements, meditations, breathing techniques galore… and they’re exhausted. Why? Because the nervous system doesn’t need a lecture; it needs safety. It needs simplicity. It needs repetition.
Stop and ask yourself: “What THREE things truly regulate me?”
- What three tools have I actually stuck with longer than a few days?
- What would change if I ruthlessly focused only on those?
Here’s what my core three looked like (and still do for many in my programs):
- Buteyko-Style Nose Breathing (Especially Midday): Simple, focused nasal breathing to calm the system (look it up!).
- Somatic Check-Ins: Pausing to ask: “Where’s the tension right now? Can I simply welcome it, without fighting?”
- Daily Journaling (One Prompt Only): “What’s real today versus what’s fear?”
See the difference? These aren’t flashy or complex. But they became powerful anchors because I used them consistently. Your challenge: Identify YOUR three. Commit to them exclusively for at least 14 days. Watch what begins to soften.
Shift #2: Stop Pushing Joy Away (It’s Part of the Medicine)
This is one of health anxiety’s most insidious symptoms: a fear of feeling good. You might catch yourself:
- Thinking, “If I relax, I’ll miss something deadly.”
- Feeling like laughing will “jinx” you.
- Believing, “I can’t enjoy this while my body feels like this.”
Here’s the truth that hit me like a ton of bricks in my own recovery: Joy isn’t just the reward for healing; joy is part of the medicine itself.
When I finally allowed myself to feel pleasure – truly laughing with my son, savoring a meal without dissecting every sensation, walking simply because the sun felt warm – that’s when deeper healing accelerated. Why? Because joy directly regulates the nervous system. Joy whispers to your body: “We are not in survival mode. It’s safe to be here now.”
Your daily practice: Each morning, ask: “Where can I allow just 1% more joy in today?” And when it shows up – a moment of peace, a genuine smile, a pleasant sensation – don’t push it away. Don’t justify it. Just receive it. Healing isn’t just about fixing what’s broken; it’s about fully feeling what’s good.
Shift #3: Become Proactive With Structure (Reclaim Your Day)
Health anxiety thrives on reactivity. You wake up thinking, “Let’s see how bad I feel before I decide what to do.” Healing happens when you flip this script. Structure sends a powerful signal to your nervous system: “We are safe enough to plan. We are not at the mercy of symptoms anymore. We are leading this day.”
What does proactive structure look like?
- A Simple Morning Ritual: Movement (gentle!), breathwork, journaling. Consistency is key.
- Consistent Meals: Eating before you’re shaky, anxious, or ravenously hungry.
- Gentle, Regular Movement: Walks, stretching – nothing punishing.
- Digital Boundaries: No symptom Googling. No phone in bed. Protecting your mental space.
- An Evening Wind-Down: Stretching, a hot shower (or cold face plunge!), calming audio – signaling safety to the vagus nerve.
I know, it sounds basic. But “basic” is precisely what your inner protector needs to rewire. Predictability is what your frazzled nervous system craves. The more you show up for your day on purpose, the less room anxiety has to hijack it.
You Are More Than Your Anxiety
As we wrap up, hear this from my heart: You don’t need to be completely “healed” to start living again. You just need to stop abandoning yourself every time fear knocks. You can let the fear in, see it for what it is – your misguided protector – and stay with yourself anyway.
Yes, that inner guard dog can be loud. But listen closely: your healing voice is rising. With each conscious breath, each chosen moment of simplicity, each embrace of joy, each step taken within your structure, you teach your body the most profound lesson: “I’ve got you. We’re safe now. We’re home.”
